Disposing of razor blades safely and sustainably

Anyone who values sustainability in everyday life would be wise to invest in a DE razor, such as one from MÜHLE. With proper care, these high-quality razors will last for decades. Their packaging is made entirely of cardboard and is 100% recyclable – the same applies to the classic stainless steel DE blades. But what about the sharp blades? Can they be recycled? And how can you prevent others from cutting themselves on a used razor blade?

Can you recycle razor blades?

Can you recycle razor blades?

Unfortunately, modern razor blades and disposable razors still consist of an inseparable combination of plastic and metal, which means they must always be disposed of in general or household waste. Recycling is usually not an option here.

The situation is different with double-edged razor blades (DE blades) made of stainless steel. This valuable raw material can be recycled relatively easily – you just need to know how. The general rule of thumb is as follows: razor blades should never be placed in recycling containers or bags. Therefore, we recommend collecting the blades and delivering them to a recycling center or scrap metal dealer near you. In some regions, there are also special recycling bins for metal where the blades, collected in a sealed container, can be disposed of.

Additionally, selected pharmacies, zero-waste stores, and organic food shops offer you the option to drop off the blades you’ve collected.

Collecting razor blades safely

There are several ways to collect your used razor blades. A screw-top jar or a tightly sealed metal tin can be a quick solution. However, we definitely recommend a long-term solution – namely, purchasing a so-called blade bank (also known as a blade collector).

With a blade bank, you can dispose of your blades in a particularly stylish and safe way. At Proshave, we offer various Blade Banks, available in different sizes and materials.

Like a piggy bank, the container can hold hundreds of used razor blades before it needs to be emptied. Some of them can be emptied easily and safely through an opening at the bottom. To do this, simply open the container, empty the blades into another container for transport, dispose of them, and the task is done. However, there are also blade banks that are "disposal-only." This means they cannot be opened and must be recycled along with the blades. It doesn’t get much easier than that. However, this also means you’ll need to purchase a new Blade Bank once one is filled up.
