Are Safety Razors suitable for beginners?

How does a Safety Razor differ from a cartridge razor?
A cartridge razor typically has several narrow blades that are placed in a plastic housing, which is attached to the handle using a click or pin system, depending on the manufacturer.
In contrast, a Safety Razor uses a classic Straight razor. The shaving head usually consists of a screw upper part (also called the capsule) and a lower part (comb). The blade has a standardized central hole or cutout and is placed between the capsule and the comb. Grooves on the underside of the capsule help to position the blade correctly. The capsule and comb are then screwed together with the handle.
What types of Safety Razors are there? What is the difference between an open and closed comb?
The main difference between Safety Razors is the type of comb. If the lower part has teeth, it is called an open comb safety scraper. If the lower part has a straight foam edge, it is usually a closed comb.
Most Safety Razors offered by Mühle have a closed comb. Our best-selling R 89 with closed comb is considered one of the gentlest Safety Razors on the market and is ideal for beginners. An interesting fact: the R 89 shaving head is also used in all other Mühle design series, except the ROCCA and COMPANION series, which have their own shaving head designs.
On the other hand, an open comb Razor is more direct and provides a particularly close shave. It is preferred by experienced users and those with very heavy beard growth. But even with thick hairs, we recommend starting with a closed comb to get used to shaving with a Safety Razor. Safety Razors with open comb (R 41) are available in the TRADITIONAL design series. It is worth noting that the shaver head can be replaced later by purchasing a replacement head (except for the ROCCA and COMPANION series).
Is it cheaper to switch to a Safety Razor compared to a cartridge razor?
Yes, it's definitely worth changing. To give a clear comparison, let's look at some concrete figures when using Mühle products: Gillette, a manufacturer of cartridge blades, recommends replacing your Razor Blades after 7-10 shaves. If you shave every other day, you should ideally replace your blades every 2-3 weeks. Over the course of a year, you would use approximately 21 Gillette Doube Edge Blades. Currently, a pack of 8 Gillette Fusion ProGlide blades costs €24.95. At a price of around €3.12 per blade, that amounts to approximately €65.50 per year.
Now let's compare this to a Safety Razor. At Mühle, we recommend replacing the blades after 3-5 shaves. If you shave every other day, you should change your blade weekly. Over the course of a year, you would use around 52 blades. MÜHLE Razor Blades are sold in packs of 10 and cost €2.75 per pack. At around €0.275 per blade, this amounts to an annual cost of approximately €14.30.
Compared to cartridge blades, this results in a saving of €51.20. Even when taking into account the initial investment in a Safety Razor like the TRADITIONAL R 89 or COMPANION, it is cheaper to switch within the first year. In subsequent years, you will continue to save money and reduce waste.
I'm thinking about switching to wet shaving. What do I need to get started?
To start, we recommend a Safety Razor with a closed comb, matching blades and a high-quality Shaving Cream.
To enhance your shaving experience, we also suggest a Shaving Brush and a soothing Aftershave balm. A thorough lathering with the broom softens it (facial hair), allowing the Razor to glide over the skin more easily.
This leads to a particularly gentle shave, reducing the risk of cuts and irritation.
What should I consider when choosing a Safety Razor?
When choosing a Safety Razor, the first thing to consider is the shaving head (i.e. closed or open comb). Other factors such as handle size, weight or material depend on your personal preferences.
Mühle offers a wide range of options, from high-quality resin to precious woods or robust stainless steel. Discover our full range of Safety Razors below:
Can women also use Safety Razors?
Yes, and we've developed MÜHLE COMPANION, a unisex Safety Razor specially designed for gender-neutral shaving.
Which blades can be used in a Mühle Safety Razor?
Classic Razor Blades have a standardized size and shape and are offered by different manufacturers, so you're not tied to a specific brand.
Mühle blades are made in Germany and are designed to provide a particularly gentle shave. They are available in a compact pack of 10 for €2.75 or in a large pack of 200 blades. Of course, they are packed entirely in paper and are fully recyclable.
Are Safety Razors more environmentally friendly than disposable razors? Are the blades reusable?
If you want to live more sustainably, a Safety Razor is definitely a good choice. The high-quality workmanship of these Razors makes them reliable companions for many years.
Zero waste is the motto, with fully recyclable paper packaging. The pure metal Razor Blades can also be recycled.
You can read more about what you need to consider in our blog post on proper Razor Blade disposal.
I've heard that Safety Razors are better for the skin - is this true?
What it does. With only one blade and one or two times the surface area, a Safety Razor provides a smooth, gentle shave. In contrast, the 3 to 5 overlapping blades of a cartridge razor can be much harder on the skin, potentially causing irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin. Additionally, the shaving head of a Safety Razor can be fully opened, allowing for a more thorough cleaning between uses, making it easier to shave longer hairs without clogging the blade.
However, it's important to note that the quality of your shave depends largely on your preparation. Thorough lathering with a Shaving Brush softens the (facial) hair, allowing the Razor to glide over the skin more easily. This results in a particularly gentle shave, with less frequent irritation of the skin.
