Guide to an irritation-free shave

Tips on how to shave your intimate area

No more red bumps and irritation after shaving!

Intimate shaving can be a challenge for anyone! For many, it's associated with irritation, red bumps, ingrown hairs and beard plague, and it can quickly feel like a process of fumbling around without really knowing what works. Here we take you by the hand and guide you step by step through a more gentle and effective intimate shave. The guide is both for those who are new to shaving and for those who just want to avoid the classic problems once and for all.

In this article, we've put together a thorough step-by-step guide and a number of concrete tips to help you achieve a smooth shave with minimal irritation.

Luckily, it doesn't have to be that hard!

This guide is for allAnyone who wants a more comfortable shave - regardless of gender, experience or skin type. The methods and advice are uni-sex and can be used by both men and women. You don't need to have tried shaving before, nor do you need to have the "right" equipment from the start. The guide is structured so that everyone can participate and you can easily adapt it to your own needs and preferences.

For many, intimate shaving sounds more complicated than it needs to be. The truth is that the vast majority of problems arise from not preparing the skin properly or using the wrong products. With the right approach, you can significantly minimize irritation. You can take the guide at your own pace, skip back and forth between steps and return if in doubt. There are no right or wrong questions - and no expectations that you need to know anything in advance.

Step 1

Cut or trim the hairs

Before you start shaving, it's a good idea to prepare the area by cutting or trimming the hairs. This is especially true if it's your first time shaving or if it's been a while since you last shaved.

Use one Trimmer or a Scissors to shorten the hairs. Trimming makes it easier for the Razor to work and reduces the risk of the Razor getting stuck in longer hairs.

This is especially useful as longer hair can lead to a less effective shave and increase the risk of irritation.

Step 2

Take a shower

A warm bath is an important preparation as it removes dirt and debris from the area that can cause irritation.

Use mild, fragrance-free products as the skin in these areas is extra sensitive.

The warm water softens the hairs, follicles and skin, making shaving easier and less irritating.

The warm water will also help open the pores, further preparing the skin for a smoother shave.

Step 3

Softens the hair

Apply a Preshave to the area you want to shave and leave it on for a few minutes. Preshave softens the hairs and creates a protective film that helps the Razor glide more easily over the skin.

This minimizes the risk of stubble and irritation. By softening the hairs, you ensure that the Razor catches the stubble effectively without cutting into the skin, which can significantly reduce the risk of irritation.

Step 4

Apply a protective product

After applying the Preshave, it's time to apply your choice of shaving product.

Choose from Shaving Foam, Shaving Gel, Shaving Oil or Shaving Cream - the most important thing is that the product softens the hairs and provides a smooth glide for the Razors. Always choose mild, fragrance-free products to minimize the risk of irritation.

Products like Proraso's white range, which includes Shaving Cream, Shaving Soap and Shaving Foam, are ideal for sensitive skin and can be used by both men and women.

LEA has also created a delicious range specifically for intimate shaving, which is also a great choice!

Step 5

Shave your beard

When you're ready to shave, take the time to perform the process carefully. To avoid ingrown hairs and unnecessary irritation, it is recommended to shave in the direction of the hair. If you want a closer shave, you may need to shave against the grain, but avoid running the Razor over the same area more than twice.

Lightly tighten the skin for an even result and rinse the Razor Blades in warm water between each use, always use a clean and sharp Razor Blade to ensure the best results and to avoid blunt and irritating blades.

When it comes to choosing a Razor, there are two options when it comes to intimate shaving:

1. multi-blade Razors: If you prefer a multi-blade Razors, LEA's range can be an excellent solution. LEA's Razors offer a smooth shave and are known for their durability and affordability.

2. DE Safety Razor: For those who want an eco-friendly option, the DE Safety Razor is a great choice. Mühle's Safety Razors are both stylish and functional, with ultra-cheap Razor Blades and a durable construction.

Step 6

Rinse yourself

After shaving, rinse the area in cold water. The cold water helps to close the pores and soothe the skin.

It can also reduce irritation and leave skin feeling fresh and renewed.

Step 7

Apply Aftershave

Finish your intimate shave with an aftershave to prevent dryness and reduce the risk of redness. A good aftershave maintains the skin's moisture balance and soothes the skin with its nourishing ingredients.

Choose an alcohol-free Aftershave for a more pleasant experience and to avoid the stinging sensation that alcohol-based products can cause.

Is shaving different for men and women?

No, the basic principles are the same for everyone. The structure and needs of the skin are the same regardless of gender, so techniques, steps and products can be used uni-sex. The most important thing is to take into account the sensitivity of the skin in the intimate area and adapt the shave to your own skin type and hair growth.

What should I do if I often get red bumps or irritation?

Red bumps, razor bumps and ingrown hairs are among the most common intimate shaving challenges. They typically occur if the skin is not properly prepared, if you shave against the direction of the hairs or if the skin is not given the necessary care afterwards. By following the step-by-step guide - especially preparation and aftercare - you can significantly reduce irritation

Do I need special products for intimate shaving?

Yes, it is highly recommended. Skin in the intimate area is more delicate than the rest of the body, so regular shaving products can be too drying or irritating. Products designed specifically for intimate shaving help protect the skin, reduce friction and prevent discomfort. In the guide, we have provided links to products that are best suited for this purpose.

How often should you shave?

There is no one correct answer as it depends on your skin type, hair growth and personal preferences. Some people can shave several times a week, while others need longer breaks between shaves. The most important thing is to listen to your skin and give it time to recover if it feels irritated or sensitive.

Is it normal for skin to itch after shaving?

Yes, slight itching can occur - especially if the hair is starting to grow back or if the skin is a bit dry. Proper aftercare, such as moisturizing and soothing products, can help reduce itching and discomfort. If itching is persistent, it may be a sign that the skin needs more care or longer breaks between shaves.

Congratulations! Now you're done

When you're done shaving, take a look in the mirror to make sure the result is as desired.

You may need to make small adjustments with Scissors or Razor Blades to perfect your shave. Make sure your intimate shave is smooth and satisfying.
