If the word fumum sounds familiar, it may be because it has been adopted into both French (fumée) and English (fume). Here the word also means smoke or steam, which brings to mind smoky men's rooms, where men with cigars and mustaches gamble for the entire family fortune. The word therefore does not immediately have any links to fragrant flower meadows.
If we are just going to end the history lesson, then the Egyptians - and especially the Egyptian pharaohs - were known for their perfumes, which at the time were rather fragrant salves than actual men's perfumes. Nevertheless, perfumes have been found in, among other things, Tutankhamun's tomb and have thus been able to determine both content and use fairly accurately.
