Guide to Removing Hair from Your Nose and Ears

Hair in the nose and ears is completely natural and actually serves a purpose. Among other things, nose hair helps filter dust and small particles from the air we breathe. With age, however, these hairs can become more visible, longer, or coarser, which is why many people choose to trim or remove them for cosmetic reasons.

There are several different methods available, and which one is best for you depends, among other things, on how close a shave you want and how comfortable you are with the various methods.

In this guide, we’ll go over trimmers, scissors, and wax for nose and ear hair so you can find the solution that works best for you.

1. Nose Hair Trimmer

Perfect for those who want: A quick, easy, and consistent solution.

A nose hair trimmer is one of the easiest ways to keep visible nose hairs under control. The trimmer cuts the hairs short without pulling them out by the root.

Many Nose Hair Trimmers can also be used on visible hairs around the ear and at the entrance to the ear canal.

How to Use a Nose Hair Trimmer

1. Start with a clean, dry nose
. Blow your nose and make sure the area is clean and dry.

2. Locate the visible hairs
. Use a mirror and good lighting. Focus on the hairs visible at the nostrils.

3. Trim carefully
Turn on the Trimmer and gently guide it along the inside of the nostrils. Avoid inserting it any further than necessary.

4. Take it a little at a
time Move the Trimmer slowly and check the results in the mirror as you go. It’s not necessary to remove all the nose hairs.

5. Clean the
trimmer. Remove hair and clean the trimmer head according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

For ear hair:

Use the Trimmer on visible hairs on the outer ear and around the entrance to the ear canal. Never insert the Trimmer deep into the ear.

2. Ear and Nose Hair Scissors

Ideal for those who want: High precision and control when removing individual visible hairs.

Ear and nose hair scissors are small scissors that typically have rounded tips. This makes them better suited for gentle trimming around the nose and ears than regular pointed scissors.

These scissors are especially handy if you only have a few stray hairs that you want to trim.

How to Use Ear and Nose Hair Scissors

1. Make sure you have good lighting
. Stand in front of a mirror so you can clearly see the hairs that need to be trimmed.

2. Use only appropriate scissors
. Choose ear and nose hair scissors with rounded tips. Do not use regular sharp or pointed scissors inside your nose or ear.

3. Trim only visible hairs
Carefully trim the hairs that stick out or are clearly visible at the nostrils and inside and outside the ear.

4. Avoid inserting the scissors too far in
. Use the scissors around the nostrils—not deep inside the nose.

5. Clean the scissors after use
. Wipe down and clean the scissors before putting them away.

3. Wax

Ideal for those who want: A longer-lasting result and prefer to remove hair rather than trim it.

Waxing works differently than using a trimmer or scissors. Instead of cutting the hair, it is pulled out by the root, which can provide a longer-lasting result.

However, nose hair serves a natural function and helps filter out particles. At the same time, waxing can irritate the sensitive skin inside the nose. Therefore, wax should only be used on the areas and in the manner for which the specific product is intended. Wax should not be inserted deep into the nose or ear.

How to Use Wax for Ear and Nose Hair

1. Always read the instructions first
. Different wax products may have different instructions. Therefore, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Make sure the area is clean
. Wipe your nose and make sure the skin around the nostrils is clean and dry. Do the same for your ear.

3. Prepare the
wax. Heat or prepare the wax exactly as described on the product. Check the temperature carefully if the product needs to be heated.

4. Apply only to the intended area
. Apply the wax according to the product’s instructions and avoid inserting the wax or applicator deep into the nose or ear.

5. Allow the wax to
set. Wait for the amount of time specified in the product instructions.

6. Remove the
wax. Remove the wax using the motion and technique recommended by the manufacturer.

7. Allow the skin to rest
. Avoid repeating the treatment on irritated or tender skin.

Which method should you choose?

1. Nose Hair Trimmer: Good for quick and regular maintenance. The hairs are trimmed short rather than removed.

2. Nose hair scissors: Good for precision work and individual long hairs. Requires a bit more care and control.

3. Nose hair wax: Removes hair from the root and therefore typically provides longer-lasting results, but can also be more uncomfortable and irritate the skin.

Remember: Nose hairs actually serve a purpose

Although nose hairs can be cosmetically bothersome, they are not superfluous. They help trap dust and other particles before they travel further into the respiratory tract.

Therefore, the goal isn’t necessarily to make the nose completely hair-free. For most people, grooming involves removing or trimming the visible hairs around the nostrils.

Tips for Safe Hair Removal

Always use products and tools that are intended for the area, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid inserting trimmers, scissors, wax, or other tools deep into the nose or ear canal.

Also, avoid treatment if the skin is irritated, has sores, or is inflamed. Stop if the treatment causes pain or bleeding.
