We have a lot of customers asking what the difference is between a Shaving Cream and a Shaving Soap. Both are used before the actual shaving begins. Their purpose is to soften the stubble and protect the skin from your Razor Blade. Both the cream and the Soap are lathered up with a Shaving Brush and also result in the same product - Shaving Foam.
But that's where the similarities end, or do they really? The difference between a Shaving Soap and Shaving Cream is not quite as black and white as you might think.
We will try to explain it in more detail in the following.
Shaving Soap vs. Shaving Cream
There are three main ways in which Shaving Soap and Shaving Cream differ from each other:
1. consistency
1. consistency
In a nutshell, the difference lies in the consistency. A Shaving Cream typically has a soft consistency, while a Shaving Soap has a firm/hard consistency.
However, there are several cases where the explanation is inadequate. Because you can buy both soft Shaving Soaps and hard Shaving Creams.
Shaving Soaps and Shaving Creams are therefore very similar, and in these cases it's all about what the manufacturer chooses to call their product.
2. Dosage
2. Dosage
When a Shaving Cream comes in a jar, you can easily pick up an appropriate amount with your fingers (or Shaving Brush), and likewise, you can easily dose a Shaving Cream in a tube because the product can simply be squeezed out into your shaving bowl.
You can't do the same with a Shaving Soap because it's a solid, hard mass. In other words, Shaving Soap should always be dosed using a Shaving Brush.
3. Foaming
3. Foaming
Following on from point 2, it's also important to point out that a Shaving Soap should always be lathered up with your Shaving Brush. You can't just run the Shaving Soap around your face before you start shaving.
You can, however, with a Shaving Cream. Shaving Cream can be applied directly to the face with your fingers if you're in a hurry. However, we always recommend lathering it up with your Shaving Brush to get the most delicious Shaving Foam.
You'll find that a Shaving Cream foams up faster than a Shaving Soap. It often takes a little more work to lather up Shaving Soap due to its firm consistency, but it's definitely worth the extra effort.
We have created two guides that show you how to lather up your Shaving Soap or Shaving Cream step by step. You can read them here:
The choice is very individual
Some find that a Shaving Soap provides a better glide and better skin protection than creams. On the other hand, a Shaving Soap can be a little harder on the skin in terms of drying, so it's a good idea to finish shaving with a good moisturizer when using a Soap.
If you have dry, sensitive and delicate skin, we recommend using a Shaving Cream instead of a Shaving Soap as it provides extra moisture and care during shaving.
If you have normal skin, you can decide for yourself whether a Shaving Soap or Shaving Cream works best for you. For many men, it's a good idea to alternate between the two consistencies so that some days you use one type and other days the other.
