Get help finding the Shaving Brush that suits your needs!

You've decided to invest in a Shaving Brush for a great, traditional wet shave. You click on Proshave's "Shaving Brush" tab and discover that the range is huge! So which Shaving Brush should you choose? And what is the difference between the different Shaving Brushes?

Don't worry: It's not as confusing as it looks! We've created this guide to help you find the right Shaving Brush for you. Below we've listed the factors that come into play when choosing the perfect Shaving Brush for your daily shave.

But first: Why do I need a Shaving Brush?

To get a better, closer and more comfortable shave, you simply need a Shaving Brush. The Shaving Brush is used to lather up your Shaving Cream/Saving Soap into a delicious, velvety Shaving Foam. And it's a real pleasure to distribute the Shaving Foam with a proper Shaving Brush.

The Shaving Brush has an exfoliating effect on the skin and therefore removes dead skin cells. It also has the great advantage that it lifts your stubble from the skin so that your Razor can reach even the smallest hairs. This gives you a close and smooth shave.

Step 1: Bristles

Silvertip Badger

Silvertip Badger represents the absolute best in Shaving Brushes.

It is the most exclusive quality of badger hair, characterized by extremely soft, flexible yet strong fibres. The result is a luxurious feel against the skin and an unrivaled ability to absorb water and Soap, so you can easily build up a rich, creamy and protective Shaving Foam.

This type of Shaving Brush is made for the connoisseur who wants the ultimate shaving experience and doesn't want to compromise on comfort, performance or quality.

Step 1: Bristles

Silvertip Fiber®

If you're looking for the best in fiber brushes, a Silvertip Fiber® Shaving Brush from Mühle is an obvious choice.

The advanced synthetic fibers are extremely soft on the skin, have excellent water and soap absorption and are incredibly durable. This means you can easily whip up a rich and creamy Shaving Foam - every time.

You get all the exclusive features of a genuine silvertip badger brush, but with the benefits of modern synthetic materials: longer durability, easier maintenance and a more attractive price. The result is a luxurious shaving experience that is practical, economical and animal-friendly.

Step 1: Bristles

Pure Badger

Do you want to go one step further and have a Shaving Brush of the absolute highest quality? Then a badger brush is the perfect choice for you. Roughly speaking, Badger Shaving Brushes can be divided into Pure Badger, Best Badger and Silvertip Badger.

Pure Badger is the most common type of badger hair and therefore also the cheapest.

The natural badger hair is very flexible but not as soft as Silvertip Badger or Silvertip Fibre. The brush therefore has a massaging effect on the skin, removing dead skin cells and stimulating cell renewal.

Step 1: Bristles

Black Fiber

Here at Proshave we offer two types of fiber brooms: Black Fiber and Silvertip Fiber®.

A fiber brush is the obvious choice for those who want a Shaving Brush without animal hair - without compromising on quality or comfort. Developed to mimic real badger hair, the synthetic fibers provide a soft, comfortable feel against the skin, while being both durable and dimensionally stable.

Fiber brooms easily create a rich, creamy Shaving Foam for a close and comfortable shave - every time.

Step 1: Bristles

Fine/Best Badger

Fine/Best Badger sits perfectly between Pure Badger and Silvertip Badger in terms of softness and comfort.

The hairs are noticeably softer than Pure Badger but still firmer than Silvertip, providing an ideal balance between gentleness and control. The brush has good absorbency, so it easily absorbs water and Soap and helps build up a rich, creamy Shaving Foam.

This makes Fine/Best Badger an excellent choice for those who want a comfortable and efficient Shaving Brush with plenty of performance - at a more affordable price than the most exclusive variants.

Step 1: Bristles

Boar

The so-called boar bristles are made from pig hair (some manufacturers also make boar bristles from horse hair). The bristles are somewhat stiffer than a badger brush and therefore have a massaging effect on the skin. However, it becomes softer over time.

A hog hair brush is an excellent beginner's brush. Want to find out if traditional Shaving Brush shaving is for you? Then it makes sense to start with a brush at the cheaper end of the spectrum.

Step 2

Knot size

Shaving Brushes are made with different knot sizes, typically ranging from 20 mm. to 30 mm. The knot size refers to the diameter of the brush itself, where it is "glued" together at the handle. A medium brush will normally have a knot size between 21 and 23 mm.

Whether you choose a small, medium or large brush depends largely on personal preference. In fact, the knot size has a minimal impact on how the lather turns out. Two identical brushes with different knot sizes will lather equally well, but the small brush may need more water as it has a smaller suction capacity.

But why invest extra money in a big brush?

A large brush seems firmer and therefore retains more water and heat, which can give a more luxurious feel. A large brush is best for those who are in control of their wet shaving, as the lather is a little harder to control. So you'll find it easier to control and apply the Shaving Foam with a smaller/medium brush. A large Shaving Brush with a knot around 26 mm. is also optimal for men with large hands.

Step 3

Shaft material

Shaving Brushes are made in many different designs, shapes and materials in a variety of nice colors. As the performance of the handle does not depend on the material, we recommend you choose the one you like best. All Shaving Brushes have a grip that fits well in the hand. However, you should be aware that you may want to choose a slightly larger handle if you have a large hand and a slightly smaller brush if your hand is on the small side.

Shaving Brushes with handles in stylish chrome, plum wood, ash, brown horn, olive wood, moss oak, porcelain and lots of other variants that will attract positive attention.

So what are you into? And what material would you like to have on display in your bathroom?

Don't forget a holder for your Shaving Brush!

If you know in advance that you want a complete set that can be displayed, it makes sense to have a holder in mind when you invest in your Shaving Brush. Finding the perfect holder for your brush can be a bit of a science.

For example, Mühle has made holders for Shaving Brushes (and creators) that fit specifically for each product. The holder must fit snugly around the handle to prevent the brush from falling down. A Shaving Brush should always hang with the bristles down so that excess water can drain after your shave.

When buying a holder, it's important to note which model your Shaving Brush is or which series it belongs to. This will help you find the right holder for you.
