Guide to finding your hair type

Everyone hates a bad hair day. But with care that specifically suits your hair type, you're one step closer to never having a bad hair day again.

Here at Proshave, we are committed to guiding you to use the very best products! It can be difficult to know which of our many products are best for you and your hair if you don't know your hair type. Luckily, it's easy to find out, which is why we've created this short guide on how to find your hair type. Just follow these five easy steps - and then you can easily shop for the products that best suit your hair!

Please note: The guide can be used to identify both men and women's hair types!

Start here and follow the 5 steps

Step 1: Wash your hair

Start by washing your hair with a mild shampoo and avoid using conditioner or other hair care products. This will give you a clean and natural base to work with.

Step 2: Let it dry naturally

After washing your hair, let it dry naturally without using a Hair Dryer or styling products. This allows you to observe its natural state.

Step 3: Identify your hair texture

Your hair texture refers to the thickness and diameter of your hair strands. There are three main categories of hair texture:

Step 4: Evaluate your hair to determine your hair type

Greasy

Oily hair will feel oily or greasy within a day or two of washing. It may appear heavy and flat, especially at the roots.

Dry

Dry hair will feel dry, brittle and brittle, especially at the ends. It may tend to be dull and lack shine.

Normal

Normal hair is balanced and not too dry or too oily. It feels soft and smooth and has a natural shine.

Combined

Combination hair is a mix of oily and dry, where the roots can be oily while the ends can be dry or brittle.

Step 5: Assess your scalp

Beyond the hair itself, it's important to assess your scalp, as different scalp types can affect the overall condition of your hair. There are three main categories of scalp types:

Oily scalp

An oily scalp produces excess oil, which can lead to oily hair and possibly dandruff.

Dry scalp

A dry scalp can lead to dry, itchy scalp and dandruff.

Normal scalp

A normal scalp is balanced and not too dry or too oily.

Congratulations! Now you've identified your hair type and can find the right products

You've now gone through all five steps and know your hair and scalp type. This means you're ready to take control of your hair care - and choose products that work with your hair instead of against it. At Proshave, we have carefully selected products for all hair types and scalps so you can create a routine that's perfect for you. Products and care for your hair type

Read on to find out how to care for your hair and scalp type.

We also recommend the best products for all types.

Light & airy

Fine hair

Fine hair needs products that nourish and strengthen without weighing it down. Choose a volumizing shampoo that gently cleanses and adds body, and a lightweight conditioner or leave-in spray that strengthens hair without making it flat or heavy.

Avoid heavy oils and very creamy products as they can quickly make fine hair look lifeless. Instead, look for light, building formulas that provide structure, bounce and a fuller look.

Proshave tip:
Use a volume spray or root-lifter in the roots before blow-drying. It lifts the hair from the roots and gives a fresh, airy look that lasts all day.

Balance between strength and softness

Medium hair texture

Medium hair is often the most versatile and easy hair type to work with. It neither lacks volume nor weighs down easily, so the key here is to maintain the natural balance between moisture, strength and movement.

Choose a nourishing but light shampoo & conditioner that gives your hair the moisture it needs without making it heavy or flat. A weekly conditioner is also a good investment as it helps maintain shine, suppleness and protect hair from daily wear and tear from styling, weather and heat.

Proshave tip:
Alternate between moisturizing and strengthening products in your routine. This ensures that your hair retains its elasticity, strength and a healthy, well-groomed appearance.

Strength & control

Coarse hair texture

Coarse hair texture needs extra care and ample moisture to become softer, more supple and easier to work with. This hair type often tends to feel dry and stiff if not properly nourished.

Use a moisturizing shampoo, conditioner and hair treatment, preferably enriched with natural oils such as argan, coconut or shea butter to help rebuild hair structure and provide deep conditioning. If you use blow dryers or other heat tools, styling products with heat protection are essential to prevent drying and damage.

Proshave tip:
Apply a leave-in conditioner or light hair oil to the lengths to tame frizz, add shine and give hair a healthy, nourished finish throughout the day.

Try Depot's nourishing leave-in conditioner
Fresh & balanced

Oily hair

Oily hair needs products that cleanse effectively without disturbing the scalp's natural balance. It's important to remove excess oil and product residue without drying out the scalp - as this can cause it to produce even more oil to compensate.

Choose shampoos with cleansing and balancing ingredients like clay, citrus or tea tree that help keep hair fresh and light. Avoid heavy conditioners and masks on the scalp - instead, use them only on the lengths where the hair needs the most care.

Proshave tip:
Use dry shampoo between washes to absorb excess oil and give your hair a clean, airy feel - without having to wash it too often.

Try a cleansing shampoo bar
Moisture & shine

Dry hair

Dry hair needs extra care and intensive moisture to regain its suppleness and shine. When hair lacks moisture, it can feel stiff, dull and more prone to breakage if not cared for properly.

Choose a nourishing shampoo and conditioner without sulfates, as these are gentler and won't dry out the hair further. Supplement with a deep conditioning treatment 1-2 times a week to rebuild the hair's structure and strengthen it from within. Ingredients such as argan oil, coconut oil and shea butter are particularly effective in nourishing and restoring a healthy, shiny look.

Proshave tip:
Avoid excessive use of blow dryers, straighteners and curling irons - and always use a heat protectant to protect hair from drying out and damage.

We recommend this Mario Lorenzin hair treatment
Balance & care

Combination hair

Combination hair - with oily roots and dry lengths - requires more targeted care to keep both scalp and hair in balance. It's all about cleansing effectively where the hair is greasy and adding moisture where it's lacking.

Use a mild, balancing shampoo on the scalp to remove excess oil and a moisturizing conditioner on the lengths and ends where the hair needs the most care. Avoid applying conditioner at the roots as it can make hair look heavy and greasy.

Proshave tip:
Apply a light hair oil to the ends to keep them soft, shiny and resilient - without weighing down the rest of the hair.
