Guide on how to shave with a Shavette

Wet shaving with a Straight razor (a classic straight razor) can undoubtedly seem intimidating. You have to learn how to hold it properly, make sure the blade is always sharp with the help of a leather strap and sharpening paste - and on top of that, a Straight Razor can be very expensive.

If these are some of your concerns - and you're not yet ready for such a commitment, a Shavette might be for you! The principle is a bit the same - but the advantage of a Shavette is that the Razor Blade can simply be changed. You therefore avoid a lot of maintenance!

What is a Shavette?

A Shavette is in many ways similar to a Straight Razor at first glance, because the shape of the shaving tool itself is almost identical. In addition, both versions provide a super close shave.

However, the difference is unmistakable. Where a Straight Razor has a fixed blade that needs to be maintained with strap and paste - a Shavette has a replaceable Razor Blade that simply needs to be changed when needed. No maintenance!

A Shavette uses the classic Doube Edge Blades, which are split in half before being inserted into the Shavette. You can also choose to buy Half Blades, which are already split by the manufacturer to fit perfectly in the Shavette.

A Shavette is great for shaving small and hard-to-reach areas that require extra precision. You'll often be able to make a straight edge more easily with a Shavette as its shape gives you a good view while shaving.

Razor Blades for the Shavette

You typically have two choices when it comes to Razor Blades for a Shavette. Either you can choose to buy the classic Doube Edge Blades and break them in half before inserting them into the Razor's blade holder. Or you can choose to buy the so-called Half Baldes, which are already ready to use when you buy them.

No matter what type of Razor Blades you choose, Razor Blades are very cheap to use! A Half Blade typically costs less than a dollar each and a DE-Blade from 2 dollars each.

With a Shavette in your hand, you no longer have to compromise on the sharpness of the Razor Blade, but you can replace it in time with a clear conscience. This means you get a much closer and smoother shave, while minimizing the risk of irritation and razor burn.

In other words, a Shavette provides a close and smooth shave at a very low price!

The history of the Shavette

The name 'Shavette' was a term used by German company Dovo Solingen to market its Straight razors with replaceable blades. Dovo originally designed and sold Shavettes to professional barbers who needed a tool to shave sharply at the neck, hairline and sideburns - an alternative to Scissors or Electric Shaver.

The Shavette became popular when the German government began requiring licenses for hairdressers and barbers who used the classic Straight Razors. There was a concern that they were not disinfected for bacteria between customers - and that they could pass on blood-borne diseases like hepatitis and HIV. All Straight Razors had to be disinfected after each customer, which was very time consuming.

Due to the hassle of disinfecting, more and more barbers began to use Shavettes as the disposable blades removed concerns about lack of sanitation and hygiene. As Shavette use became more widespread and other companies produced their versions, the name 'Shavette' was now used as a general term for razors with replaceable Razor Blades.

How to shave with a Shavette ⬇️

Step 1: Preparation is key

If you have a long beard, it's a good idea to Trimmer it before shaving.

Take a shower before you shave. Firstly, it's important that you only Razor on clean skin. Secondly, the hot water softens the beard, ensuring an easier shave. If you don't have time for a hot shower, you can choose to wash your face thoroughly with warm water instead.

Then apply a Preshave. A Preshave softens the stubble and puts a protective film on the skin to prepare it for the Razor Blade. By providing an easier glide over the skin, it reduces the risk of irritation and razor bumps and gives you a closer, more comfortable shave.

Step 2: Apply Shaving Foam

Shaving on dry skin is a bad idea if you want a clean and smooth shave. Sliding a blade on dry skin will cause more friction, resulting in damaged skin and increasing the risk of cuts and irritation. If you're in a hurry, you can use ready-to-use canned Shaving Foam. But you should do yourself a favor and make your own Shaving Foam from Shaving Soap or Shaving Cream.

Here's how you do it:

- Soak the Shaving Brush in warm water and then give it a squeeze to release the water.

- Run the brush around in your Shaving Soap or Shaving Cream until you achieve a rich, creamy consistency.

- Apply the now-foaming product to the face in circular motions to lift the stubble from the skin.

Step 3: Get a grip on the grip

There are many ways to hold a Shavette (or Straight razor) and it's a matter of taste which grip works best for each individual.

In hairdressing schools, students are taught a standard grip, which is still the most popular grip today. In this grip, open the razor as wide as possible so that you almost feel like you're turning it inside out. Then place your fingers as shown in the top four images.

There is also another handle that may be easier and more intuitive for you. In this grip, the Straight razor is an extension of your finger, as you can see in the bottom two images.

However, it's important to point out that you can't keep the same grip throughout your shave. You need to change your grip along the way in order to shave your entire face optimally.

Step 4: The shave itself

Always make sure to use a sharp and clean Razor Blades when shaving.

Start by shaving in the direction of the stubble to minimize irritation and the risk of cuts.

Hold the blade at an angle of approximately 30 degrees to the skin for optimal contact without Razors.

Avoid putting pressure on the Razor - instead, let the sharpness of the blade do the work and run it smoothly and controlled across the skin for a smooth, precise and comfortable result.

Step 5: After shaving

When you're done shaving, it's important to rinse your Razor and Shaving Brush clean of Shaving Foam, soap residue and stubble.

Also rinse your face with cold water to close the pores.

Finish with a good aftershave that soothes the skin and provides plenty of moisture and care. Aftershave prevents irritation and minimizes the risk of red bumps, redness, itching and razor bumps. It maintains the skin's moisture balance and has a calming effect.

More tips for your shave

- If you really want to pamper yourself, you can start your shave by soaking your face with a soaked, warm towel. Just like you would experience with a real barber.

- Do not pull out ingrown hairs with tweezers. There's a good chance the hair will break and not come out properly. Instead, pull the hair forward slightly with a needle and shave as normal. After a few weeks, the hair will most likely be back to normal.

- Razor with the beard direction - never against.

- Frequently rinse the Razor Blade of soap residue and stubble under warm water while shaving.

- Use an alcohol-free Aftershave balm if you are prone to irritations and sensitive skin.

- And most importantly, a clean and sharp Razor Blade is the most important element in achieving an irritation-free shave.
